hmm, don't have a huge problem with the fakesters.. think it's kind of silly. friendster is a HUGE waste of time, but I have no life anyways.. sometimes people email me (other times they respond to my emails) and that makes me feel "cool".. still hoping to find that diamond in the rough. I like giving nice testimonials to people & reading all the ones that they ground out in return for me-- I am a dork.

I don't need to be so close to someone to friendsterize them, although I won't be offended if I try to friendsterize someone but they don't accept.. it's just a game, anyways and different people take it to different levels of seriousness-- I should maybe spend time w/ my real friends.. but hmm-- sick of burning cds, sleeping late, never making enough beats--blargh

Your link to the Slashdot article got me reading some comments, and I think autopr0n had a really good idea. For those of you who aren't prone to following links (and I know you're out there, so don't try to pretend), he suggests that Friendster add a filter through which a user can choose to remove links formed through fake people, or I guess any people that they specify. It wouldn't map out as neatly in terms of the physical user graph, but I think it would solve this problem...

Fuckin' exactly. I've been bitching about the fake people for some time. The point about degrees of separation is good as well, and I do believe it is important to keep one's nug small, as Lin put it.

These two items combined have made Friendster useless to me, and I now only visit because my actual friends get annoyed if I don't approve their friend requests in a timely manner.

I'm not sure I think Friendster Inc. should be cracking down on the fakes; that's a bit too much oversight, but I would love it if the people who started these nonsense accounts would realize that they're fucking it up for everyone. If you like Ben Seaver that much, there's an Interests field just for that purpose, and you can even click on that to find everyone who likes Ben Seaver. Isn't that everything you get from making 'friends' with him, without the fucking-the-rest-of-us part?
