Comments on: “We Got Him”

I think the American media just couldn’t wait to use the headline “we got him!” It sounds exciting and absolute and makes Americans feel like their in a comic book or something, once again justifying that we are the superheroes and we have captured the villain…well, at least in this month’s issue. We just have to remember that although Saddam is evil, in “getting” him we have not rid the world of evilness. I’m sure there are nations out there who’d like to see “we got him!” above a few other people before celebrating (including perhaps our own Super-President with the big red W on his chest??). Pow!

Mark, you’re right, of course. Saddam’s evil. But let’s say, you saw a guy robbing a gas station and killing a bunch of people. And you locked him up in your house for years and years. Sure, I’d be glad he wasn’t out there robbing and killing – but when we found out, we’d have to throw you in jail, too.

My point: It just bugs me that, now that we found him, everyone forgets that we had no right to be looking for him in the first place.

As George Payne said yesterday, ” The capture of Saddam Hussein represents a new turning point in the American occupation of Iraq.” The American occupation of Iraq. Now I was never too good at history, but I thought we didn’t like unprovoked invasion of other countries. We certainly weren’t happy when Germany did it, or Russia, or North Vietnam, or even Iraq. I’d venture that if these were two different countries, right about now, the American planes would just be flying overhead, ready to kick the shit out of us.

Anyway, enough of my ranting. Back to my bubble.

Hmm.. how about Saddam Hussein, former leader of Iraq, personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, captured?

Not that I disagree with your first two points, of course. But let the facts stand.
