In order to see how we can optimize an orchestra’s performance, it is useful to know it will be rendered by the Csound program. In Csound, the orchestra is executed in a loop-like fashion. Every line of the orchestra that is part of an active instrument is being executed repeatedly so that it continues to generate new samples.

1. Open up the music player on your computer.
2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
3. Hit the “shuffle” command.
4. Tell us the title of the next ten songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That’s right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It’s time for total musical honesty.
5. Write it up in your blog or journal and link back to at least a couple of the other sites where you saw this.
6. If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, or etc.) occurances. You don’t have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of ten song with five artists, you can if you’d like.

Ran across this at bingtek.com. I was Dream, of course. I wouldn’t have had it any other way – in fact, I can’t think of any fictional character who’s cooler than Dream. If you’re not hip to it yet, the Sandman series was one of the best thing ever to happen to comic books. Neil Gaiman went from reinterpreting Shakespeare to Greek mythology to redesigning the whole universe from scratch, and it always worked so well. This stuff is basically required reading for anyone interested in mythology, dreams, the collective unconscious, and, above all, fantastic stories.
