FWIW, I think the phrase is "lipstick on a pig," and the second clause is just implied :)

The contest sounds like it could bear wondrous fruit, and what's more, if it doesn't, you're no worse off than you are now. You yourself can compete by tweaking your own mixes until you hear something better come along.
I myself don't think the current mixes are so bad, but I'm no expert, and I feel the intuitive truth in the priority of mixing over mastering; mastering seems like it's for playback on the perfect sound system, whereas an inferior mix is noticeable even when I'm cranking my awful ipod buds to drown out the Q train.

I start my official work schedule on Friday. No more of this amazing 8-5 training shift, instead I move to 2pm-1am shifts four days a week.

It's going to be interesting, I am in a totally different sleep mode right now, going to bed around 9/10 and waking up at 5. I don't know how the body will adjust but you gotta do what you gotta do right?

Hope the album mixing goes well dude :)

This quote from Roger Ebert <a href="http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2008/05/i_admit_it_i_loved_ind.html" rel="nofollow">on the new Indiana Jones movie</a> says it better than I could:

"Spielberg at heart will always be that kid who sneaked onto the back lot at Universal and talked himself into a job. He's the kind of man who remains in many ways a boy. He likes neat stuff. He thinks it would be fun to have Indiana and friends plunge over three waterfalls, not one. He knows that we know what back projection is, and he uses it blatantly (Indy arriving in frame as if he had jumped there, while the background rolls past a little out of focus). He knows back projection feels differently that perfect digital backgrounds -- it feels more like a movie. He likes boldly-faked editing sequences: We see the heroes in medium shot at the edge of a waterfall, we see a long shot of their boat falling to what would obviously be instant oblivion below, and then he shows the heroes surfacing together and near the shore (no rapids!) and spitting out a little water. The movie isn't a throwback to the Saturday serials of the 1930s and 1940s. It's what they would have been if they could have been."

There's nothing like a talented kid who likes neat stuff.

disjointed cartoons. some of the best music ever written has been used for cartoons. i've always wanted to be the first funk composer they had on a Fantasia sketch. the process you seem to be talking about is THE process, isn't it? to accumulate everything that you are thinking, wanting, planning. to mull it over and make it into a sort brain-paste. and then to let it steep.

but when you take the controls you are not thinking of any one thing. just a forwardness. the ole' flame without smoke dealy. i apologize for the rambling nature of this message... it is late and i am very tired. you blog is very entertaining. informative. bizarre.
