Arthur and the Geniuses Videos
As I’m sure you know, I’ve got a big gig coming up with the Geniuses at Mercury Lounge on January 28th. (Tickets on sale now!) But if you’ve never been to see us, and you’ve only heard my solo EP, you probably don’t know just how soulful this band is. So, here. I will show you.
My friend recorded these from her phone, unbeknownst to me, and I think they turned out pretty well! Hope you like! See you on the 28th!

BIG SHOW on January 28th
Jan 12, 2011 Shows
For my first official musical endeavor of the new year, I will be sailing my band, The Geniuses, into new and uncharted waters.
On January 28, we will be bringing our very best selves – our prettiest harmonies, our deadliest grooves, our newest of new songs, our tiniest of tiny instruments – to the Mercury Lounge.
We have invited all manner of suit to attend. We have to convince them that we play well with others, and are thoroughly liked by our peers.
This is where you come in. We need your pretty faces and funny dances, and most importantly, all your friends and family. Come play with us!

As for the tiny instruments, a fan from Kazakhstan gave me this shankobyz at our last gig. (That wooden Easter Island face is the case it came in.) Thanks Danelle!

I promised her I’d work it into the January show. What have I done?

Looking Back and Moving Forward

[Note: if you don't see images and embedded MP3's and videos below, click here to view the full post]
I’ve got a show coming up on Monday the 29th. My first solo show in two years.
The last time around, I had some trouble. I couldn’t figure out how to give the songs the groove they needed by myself, so I assumed the answer was more stuff. I brought in Ableton Live. I had a set of MIDI footpedals, programmed to do different things for each song. I layered keyboard tracks live, I looped harmony vocals, I wrote a nonsense song onstage… I even beatboxed. I had a binder on stage to help me keep track of all the details. It was a disaster. I spent far too much of the show hunched over the laptop, trying not to panic.

Here are some parts that worked.

Big News
Jun 3, 2007 Uncategorized
So I didn’t get any work done on the album Thursday night. But I had a good reason, really! I swear!
We auditioned a new drummer, and I was sleepily milling over the recording of his audition, while triple-checking with Matty and Marie to make sure my excitement wasn’t unjustified.
It wasn’t. He’s awesome, and his name is Brad. The band is back in session.

Day 2
May 15, 2007 Uncategorized
I just got home from rehearsal with the Geniuses. Since we don’t have a drummer anymore, it’s just me, Matty (our bass player), and my sister Marie (who sings). Matty forgot his bass, so he played acoustic guitar.
And it was so sweet. I love that feeling of friends and family making quiet music together at home. I could feel pieces falling into place tonight, grooves starting to lock in. Harmonies are starting to unfold in my head, ideas of how to really make this music beautiful. And Marie bought us these really cute band pins.
It just feels good to be with them. I can’t wait to play with them onstage. I’ve been building up so much in the past few months as a performer and as a person, and I’m itching to give that to an audience. I need to get out there and share that feeling with the world.
But everything comes at a price. No work on the album tonight. I need to get some sleep.
